It's a little thing I've kept on the shelf that has been slowly growing on its own over a span of 11 years! Really good feeling finally fleshing it out even though I feel it's still a bit raw here and there.

All Soul's Day

Finally got down to coloring this piece. This illustration was originally one of the three drawings I submitted for the OIC White Frames mini exhibition waaaay back a year ago.

It's a slightly surreal take on All Souls' Day when the dead come back to Earth to visit. Here they are being ferried by a giant mechanical construct, each soul housed in a red lantern, as they are taken through town in the middle of a festival parade.

A Martial Arts or "Wu Xia" inspired illustration of a duel over waterfalls. I've always loved the Wu Xia genre having grown up in the Tsui Hark era :)

This was an entry for the OIC White Frames mini exhibition months back which I rejected because I didn't think it was good enough. But I've recently brought it out again and developed a renewed love for it :)

It's now resurrected as a tee shirt print... crossing fingers that it will turn out okay but it's okay if it doesn't as I'm using it as an experiment to see how far high-end tee printing can be pushed heh.

Update: The print came out great and ironically, the other design which I sent that I thought would be the safe entry turned out risky heh. I've attached the two designs as laid out on tees.

Was an amazing (and stressful!) project to work on. Understandably, there was a lot of red tape involved that prevented me from including this in my blog earlier. But hopefully that has passed with time. Worked so damn hard on these illustrations heh!

Much appreciation goes to everyone who helped out in facilitating my requirements for this project, especially Ivan Heng who directed the opening and closing ceremonies, who understood my vision and allowed me almost free reign and creativity. :D

About time I updated new stuff :) The kind folks at OIC and Animax came together to kick up a project involving OIC illustrators doing interpretations of certain animes in the form of illustrations and i was one of the participating artists. I got assigned Fullmetal Alchemist (wonderful choice!) and here's my entry.

White Frames Submissions x 2

OIC had a casual mini art show at MAAD (Red Dot Museum) over the weekend and i contributed 4 b/w pencilled drawings to the show. Here are 2 of them in color.

First one is titled "Ghost Story" - I wanted to draw something with soldiers and skulls. I decided it seemed like a good idea for a military ghost story premise considering the stories I was told while doing my own National Service heh. Will update with the rest of the illustrations later on!

Second one is "Dance in the Dark" - Nothing to the concept really. I was just really pumped from my last figure drawing session and wanted to do an imagined figure drawing piece showing an elegant dancer captured in various poses.I sketched a rough of the layout and added the blindfold as an afterthought. I had an idea that it would be beautiful to portray a dancer so confident with her skill and so familiar with her body that she could dance blind. That, and I have a penchant for using movie and song related titles :p

More Figure Drawing sketches. Had a field day as I had my drawing mode on pretty early with no warm up needed :) I have added tones this time (via photoshop) to be more in line with the style I am currently adopting. I really love drawing hands! It's not that I am particularly good at them, but I love the challenge! Still need to loosen up more though - I'm trying to merge my past habit of tightly controlled lines with raw messier lines (like my previous post). "Controlled Chaos" :p

The Dragon Prince's Letter to his Father

This is a graphic adaptation of a story I read from Cyril Wong's Let Me Tell You Something About That Night. It is an amazing collection of "adult fairytales", and i would recommend it to everyone (except for kids). Be warned that like real life, not all fairy tales end "happily ever after". Like the stories in the book, most stories often end with "it sucks but you lived your life as best as you could" or "where do we go from here?"

This is an 18-page work in progress and i will update the pages as they come. I estimate that the story will be completed around July, though i hope to be able to finish this sooner. If you like it, please pay tribute to Cyril when you see meet him :) he really is an inspiring writer. Cynical... but inspiring heh heh.

A6 Future

I was one of those privileged enough to have been invited to participate in the A6 Postcard project, a collaboration between Singapore-based and UK-based illustrators. Basically, each of us had to ask a question about the future in the form of half an illustration on a postcard and send it to another illustrator who would answer it with another illustration on the remaining half.

The coloured visual is the postcard i sent out to be answered while the black and white visual is the question I received and answered.

Programme for a children's play. This was not actually printed on newsprint. the newsprint paper was scanned in so the final piece would look like a newspaper when it's folded. the full size folded out is A3. The thing I love about Players Theatre is that they have a lot of heart and ingenuity put into telling their selected stories without always needing to do what is expected of children's theatre :D

Although I am officially trained as a Graphic Designer, I have made most of my living as a storyboard artist / visualiser. For this I am most grateful to the film/video production and advertising industries :) I know I'm not the best storyboard artist around, but i was told that I'm one of the fastest for those 'I-need-a-miracle' jobs heh... But of course, the person who told me that was trying to butter me up for a discount...

It was pretty fun for a commercial job since they pretty much gave me a lot of freedom to propose whatever i thought was appropriate for each film. It gave me a chance to try many different types of illustration styles that I always wanted to try!

The Publicity/Display Poster I illustrated and designed for Berrylite, a local Hollywood-themed Yogurt shop. I thought of the most iconic movie poster in Hollywood (that I like) and came up with this heh heh... Hope the powers that be see it as flattery :)

This is an illustration for a commercial job, but I've been experimenting with the style for my own personal works too. guess you could say first it's the first project that I've managed to incorporate my own personal style (That i've only recently discovered btw) so Power to me! More to come hopefully...

This is the 3rd year I've worked on illustrating for the The Peranakan Ball (Will be posting up the other 2 illustration). And it has been a blast! really gives my vector skills a good workout. As always, the illustration is mainly for the invitation card and it designed with a layer of gold hotstamping in mind. This main title text was rejected and replaced with a more conventional typeface, but i prefer this version :)
